Significant Changes to Stage Setup and Instrumentation

The opening performance of the 2026 leg of the Rough and Rowdy Ways tour saw Bob Dylan introduce major alterations to his standard live presentation. During the show at the Orpheum Theater, the musician opted to play only six songs from his Rough and Rowdy Ways album, a decrease from the nine tracks he has typically performed from that record.

The physical arrangement of the stage also underwent a transformation. Dylan chose to set aside his usual grand piano, replacing it with a tiny keyboard positioned in the center of the stage. The musical arrangements were further modified as guitarists Bob Britt and Doug Lancio performed on acoustic instruments rather than electric guitars. While an electric guitar was visible throughout the night, sitting on Dylan’s amplifier, the artist did not touch the instrument during the performance.

Rare Performances and a Historic Live Debut

The concert began with a standard rendition of “I’ll Be Your Baby Tonight,” but the setlist quickly diverged from recent norms. Dylan performed “The Man in the Long Black Coat” from the 1989 album Oh Mercy, marking the first time the song has been included in a setlist since 2013. The performance also featured “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right” and a cover of Bo Diddley’s “I Can Tell,” a track that Dylan had previously restricted to his appearances at Outlaw Festival shows in recent years.

The most notable addition to the setlist occurred near the conclusion of the evening. Dylan performed the 1958 Eddie Cochran classic “Nervous Breakdown” for the first time in his career as a live performer. Although phones were banned from the venue and no video footage of the debut has surfaced, clean audio recordings were captured by fans in attendance.

Technical Difficulties and Performance Atmosphere

The Omaha show offered fans a clear view of Dylan, standing in contrast to his appearances on the final leg of the Outlaw Festival tour in September 2025. During those previous shows, Dylan wore a hoodie pulled tight over his head and utilized bright lights and a music stand near his piano, making it nearly impossible for audience members to see his face. While Dylan never provided an explanation for the 2025 staging, it is believed to be a response to fans filming and taking photographs during the summer. At the Orpheum Theater, Dylan was able to enforce a phone ban by requiring attendees to place their devices in pouches at the door, a measure that was not viable at the large outdoor amphitheaters used for the Outlaw Festival.

Despite the improved visibility, the Omaha concert was described as having several "rough patches" related to the audio setup. A report by Matt Simonsen, published in Ray Padgett’s Flagging Down the Double E’s newsletter, detailed significant issues with the microphone placement:

"[It was] the roughest concert of the Rough and Rowdy Ways tour. We should all say a prayer for the roadie who placed Bob’s microphone tonight, because Bob was too far from it when he sat, uncomfortable when he leaned into it, and picked it up and plopped it down about 10 times throughout the night (each time it emitted a louder boom than the time before). In fact, the loudest instrument of the night was the microphone stand as it hit the stage floor! Bob’s voice may sound weak on the recordings when they come out, but he sounded really good when he was comfortable with the microphone. At other times we couldn’t hear him well due to the distance between him and the mic."

Upcoming 2026 Tour Schedule

Following the Omaha opener, Dylan’s spring tour continues with a performance at Mary W. Sommervold Hall in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The current leg is scheduled to conclude on May 1 at the Abilene Auditorium in Abilene, Texas.

Additional U.S. dates have been confirmed for the summer of 2026. These include two nights at the Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery in Woodinville, Washington, on June 6 and 7. Dylan is also scheduled to perform at the WinStar World Casino and Resort in Thackerville, Oklahoma, on July 2. Further summer dates are expected but have not yet been officially announced.
