Stevie Young's History with AC/DC
Stevie Young is the nephew of AC/DC founders Malcolm and Angus Young. He officially stepped into the band in 2014 after Malcolm Young retired due to the onset of dementia. Prior to being named an official member of the longtime group later that year, Stevie played on the band's 2014 album, Rock or Bust, and subsequently performed on the Rock or Bust World Tour in 2015-16.
Speaking to Sweden's Aftonbladet in 2014, Angus Young explained the decision to bring Stevie into the lineup permanently, noting his previous experience filling in for his uncle during a 1988 U.S. tour:
"It was Malcolm himself [who said we should carry on]... and the logical choice to fulfill Mal's role on the project was my nephew Stevie. He had filled in for Mal in 1988 and he had done an American tour, a whole American tour, and he did it well."
— Angus Young
In a separate interview with The Pulse Of Radio, Angus elaborated on why his nephew was a natural fit for the legendary hard rock group:
"He just plugged into what we were doing, 'cause he's of the same age era as Malcolm and myself,"
"He was my eldest brother's son. You know, we all grew up together. Mal played that style how he played that rhythm style. Stevie, you know, he emulated that."
— Angus Young
Malcolm Young passed away in November 2017 at the age of 64, having suffered from dementia for at least three years.
