History

Miles Dewey Davis III was born May 26, 1926, Alton, IL, and grew up in East St. Louis, IL, the son of a successful dental surgeon. Davis took up studying trumpet in his early teens, playing with local bands until he moved to New York City in 1944 to study at the Juilliard School. But his ultimate training during this time was as a side man to Charlie Parker.

"The Miles Davis All Stars - Broadcast Sessions" are live performances at venues in and around New York recorded between May 1958 and January 1959, the period between "Milestones" (Columbia, 1958) and "Kind of Blue" (Columbia, 1959). The various quintets and sextets are ably staffed by Miles Davis, trumpet; John Coltrane, tenor sax; Cannonball Adderley, alto sax; Red Garland, piano; Bill Evans, piano; Wynton Kelly, piano; Paul Chambers, bass; Philly Joe Jones, drums; Jimmy Cobb, drums; Gerry Mulligan, baritone sax; and Candido, percussion.
