Bret Michaels Cancels 2026 Tour Dates for Surgery Recovery

Medical Assessment Following Sugar Hill Performance

The announcement comes shortly after Bret Michaels attempted to return to the stage on Friday, August 21, at The Bowl at Sugar Hill in Georgia. While the singer performed with his solo band, a medical assessment conducted immediately after the show determined that he was not yet physically ready for the rigors of touring.

Representatives for the singer released a statement on social media explaining the necessity of the hiatus:

"Following Bret Michaels’ comeback show [in Sugar Hill], doctors and paramedics determined immediately after the show that he still needs additional rest and recovery from his recent surgeries. Bret will be taking the next several months off to heal and get back to 100%."

Michaels' medical team, including physician Abby Borhan, M.D. and Dr. Patel, emphasized that the environmental conditions of summer touring posed a significant risk to his health. In their official recommendation, they stated:

"We will be pulling Bret off the road for the time being. He wanted to attempt this show, but we feel there is a much-needed period of rest and slow recovery ahead, especially considering the heat and humidity during the summer months and the effect it can have on his blood sugar levels."

Surgical History and Diabetic Complications

The health issues began in late July 2026. Following a performance in Spokane, Washington, on July 18, which honored military heroes and their families, Michaels experienced severe kidney pain. He was subsequently diagnosed with a "complicated obstructing kidney stone," which required immediate surgery on July 19. During the procedure, Dr. Borhan successfully placed a ureteral stent.

The recovery process has been hindered by Michaels' lifelong battle with Type 1 Diabetes, a condition he has lived with since the age of six. Dr. Borhan explained the specific risks associated with his diagnosis in a statement on July 22:

"Because Type 1 Diabetes inherently compromises the immune system and impairs healing, he faces an exceptionally high risk of contracting a serious UTI or developing urosepsis, a blood infection, until the stent is removed. The demanding nature of a high-intensity tour schedule makes it impossible to maintain the sterile environments, strict hydration schedules, frequent rest, and precise blood glucose management required for his safe recovery."

Michaels himself acknowledged that his eagerness to perform may have led him to return to the stage prematurely. He shared his thoughts with fans on social media:

Impacted Tour Dates and Future Outlook

The cancellation affects six dates previously scheduled for August and September as part of the Live and Amplified Tour. This includes a headlining appearance at The Mountain Music Festival in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Additionally, two performances scheduled for November have been called off. Michaels Entertainment Group expressed their apologies to fans and private event organizers, noting that they are now looking ahead to 2027 for his return.

Michaels has a history of managing his health while on the road. In July 2025, he addressed fans regarding a diabetes scare during a pre-show meet-and-greet where his blood sugar dropped to 39 mg/dL (a level categorized by the CDC as severe low blood sugar):

Poison Reunion Plans

Despite the current health setbacks, Michaels has expressed optimism regarding a POISON reunion. In an interview with SiriusXM's "Trunk Nation With Eddie Trunk" in April, he suggested that 2027 would be an ideal year for the band to tour again, potentially marking the 41st anniversary of their debut album, Look What the Cat Dragged In. Michaels teased that the tour could be titled "40 Plus One."

Michaels, who is associated with the Rock, Country, and Hard Rock genres and was formed as an artist entity in 1963, last toured with POISON in 2022. That stadium tour saw the band supporting MÖTLEY CRÜE and DEF LEPPARD. Since then, he has primarily performed sporadic shows with his solo band, focusing on POISON's catalog of hits.
