Amon Amarth Announces New Album The Allfather Awakens

New Songwriting Approach and Production Details

For their 13th studio effort, Amon Amarth adopted a distinct methodology compared to previous records. Rather than writing the entire album before entering the studio, the band began crafting material while still on the road. The recording process for the 10-song masterwork took place across two separate sessions at producer Jacob Hansen's studio in Denmark. The first session occurred in Spring 2025, with the final recording phases concluding in March 2026. This staggered timeline allowed the musicians to focus intensely on the individual identity of every track.

Guitarist Olavi Mikkonen explained that the band treated each song as a standalone project during the sessions to ensure maximum quality:

"We worked on one song at a time and made each song as good as possible. Then we recorded one song at a time until each track was totally finished — drums, guitars, and vocals. Only then did we start on the next one."

Sonically, the band opted for a shift in their guitar tones, moving away from 5150 amplifiers in favor of Marshalls to achieve a slightly less modern sound. The music was largely written before the lyrics, establishing the tonal foundation for the stories told throughout the record. While the band recently released an acoustic excursion titled "Upphaf," the new single "Gjallarhorn" returns to a furious Death Metal style, featuring upbeat riffs and a high-tempo chorus designed for live performances.

Lyrical Themes and Visual Identity

While Oden, the Norse "all father" of war, wisdom, and poetry, serves as the central inspiration for the lyrics and artwork, the band clarifies that The Allfather Awakens is not a concept album. Instead, it serves as a collection of epic tales centered on conflict and sacrifice. The single "Gjallarhorn" specifically references the ancient reckoning of Oden, who sacrificed his eye at the Well of Wisdom, Mímisbrunnr, for cosmic foresight.

The album's cover art features a portrait of Oden created by Tom Thiel, a long-time collaborator who has now designed seven of the band's album covers. Frontman Johan Hegg continues to explore themes of Viking exploration and loyalty, as heard in the track "We Rule The Waves":

Formed in 1992 in Tumba, Sweden, the band has maintained a consistent lineup of brothers, including Hegg, Mikkonen, Johan Söderberg, Ted Lundström, and Jocke Wallgren. This tradition, where fans sit on the ground to imitate rowing a longship, is widely credited to have started during the band's 2009 set at Bloodstock Open Air.
