History

Portugal. The Man is an American indie rock band originally formed in Wasilla, Alaska, in 2004. Now based in Portland, Oregon, the group has evolved from an experimental underground act into a Grammy-winning mainstream powerhouse. The current lineup features founding members John Gourley (vocals/guitar) and Zach Carothers (bass), alongside Zoe Manville (vocals/percussion), Eric Howk (guitar), Jason Sechrist (drums), and Kyle O'Quin (keyboards).

Origins and Early Years

Frontman John Gourley’s creative vision was shaped by a unique upbringing in rural Alaska. Raised in a generator-powered log cabin without a telephone, Gourley was immersed in a lifestyle of seasonal darkness and extreme cold, with parents who worked as dog sled mushers. This isolation, combined with interests in science fiction and personal experiences with homelessness, contributed to the band's psychedelic and often transcendent sound. The group officially debuted in 2006 with the album Waiter: “You Vultures!”, released via Fearless Records.

The Independent Era

The band maintained a prolific release schedule throughout their early years. After 2007’s Church Mouth, they moved toward an independent model, releasing Censored Colors in 2008 through their own label, Approaching AIRballoons. They continued to refine their sound with The Satanic Satanist (2009) and American Ghetto (2010), the latter of which blended their progressive rock roots with electronic elements first explored in their 2007 EP, It’s Complicated Being a Wizard.

Major Label Transition and Mainstream Success

In 2011, Portugal. The Man signed with Atlantic Records and released In the Mountain in the Cloud. Their profile grew significantly with the 2013 release of Evil Friends, produced by Danger Mouse. Influenced by the expansive sounds of Pink Floyd, the album featured a more polished, pop-inflected aesthetic and included backing vocals from Este and Danielle Haim.

The Impact of "Feel It Still"

The band reached peak commercial success with their 2017 album, Woodstock. The lead single, "Feel It Still," became a global phenomenon, reaching #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earning the group a Grammy Award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. The album’s title was inspired by a 1969 Woodstock music festival ticket stub owned by Gourley’s father, which prompted the band to write music that addressed contemporary societal and political unease.

Activism and Recent Projects

Beyond their studio albums, Portugal. The Man has engaged in various experimental and philanthropic efforts. In 2014, they partnered with the Smithsonian's National Zoo to release "Sumatran Tiger," a song designed to "go extinct" unless it was digitally reproduced and shared by fans to raise awareness for endangered species. They have also collaborated with diverse artists ranging from Mike D of the Beastie Boys to Yoko Ono. Following the massive success of Woodstock and years of touring, the band continued their discography with the 2025 release, SHISH.
