Portugal. The Man is an American indie rock band originally formed in Wasilla, Alaska, in 2004. Now based in Portland, Oregon, the group has evolved from an experimental underground act into a Grammy-winning mainstream powerhouse. The current lineup features founding members John Gourley (vocals/guitar) and Zach Carothers (bass), alongside Zoe Manville (vocals/percussion), Eric Howk (guitar), Jason Sechrist (drums), and Kyle O'Quin (keyboards).
Frontman John Gourley’s creative vision was shaped by a unique upbringing in rural Alaska. Raised in a generator-powered log cabin without a telephone, Gourley was immersed in a lifestyle of seasonal darkness and extreme cold, with parents who worked as dog sled mushers. This isolation, combined with interests in science fiction and personal experiences with homelessness, contributed to the band's psychedelic and often transcendent sound. The group officially debuted in 2006 with the album Waiter: “You Vultures!”, released via Fearless Records.
