History
Mac DeMarco, born Vernor Winfield MacBriare Smith IV on April 30, 1990, in Duncan, British Columbia, is an influential Canadian singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer. Known for his distinctive "jangle pop" sound and laid-back aesthetic, DeMarco has built a prolific career characterized by self-produced recordings and a signature guitar style.
Early Projects and Musical Beginnings
During his high school years, DeMarco was active in the local music scene, performing with several diverse groups. These included the indie rock band The Meat Cleavers, the alternative R&B project The Sound of Love, and the post-punk outfit Outdoor Miners. In 2009, he began releasing music under the moniker Makeout Videotape, producing the album Heat Wave as a self-contained indie rock project.
Solo Breakthrough and Captured Tracks Era
DeMarco’s solo career took off in 2012 following his move to Montreal and subsequent signing with Captured Tracks. He released the mini-album Rock and Roll Night Club in early 2012, showcasing a deep-voiced, glam-inflected sound. Later that same year, he released 2, a full-length studio album that earned significant critical praise and introduced his melodic, chorus-drenched guitar work to a wider audience.
In 2014, DeMarco released Salad Days, which became one of his most commercially successful and critically acclaimed records. He followed this in 2015 with two distinct projects: the nine-track instrumental collection Some Other Ones and the mini-LP Another One. These releases solidified his reputation as a mainstay of the international indie circuit.
Artistic Evolution and Mac’s Record Label
With 2017's This Old Dog, DeMarco moved toward a more synth-heavy and introspective sound, reflecting his relocation to Los Angeles. In 2019, he founded his own imprint, Mac’s Record Label, to release his future work. The first album under this label was Here Comes the Cowboy, which was introduced by the lead single "Nobody." During this era, he also participated in various collaborations, including the 2020 track "The Curse" with English artist Yellow Days.
Instrumental and Archival Releases
In 2023, DeMarco explored more experimental and archival formats. He released Five Easy Hot Dogs in January, an instrumental concept album recorded at various locations during a road trip across North America. This was followed in April by One Wayne G, an expansive collection featuring 199 tracks. Spanning nearly nine hours, the release compiled demos and finished songs recorded between 2018 and 2023, providing an exhaustive look at his creative evolution.
DeMarco continued his steady output into the mid-2020s, releasing the studio album Guitar in August 2025, further expanding a discography that remains central to the modern indie rock landscape.
