History
Band of Horses is an American indie rock band recognized for its atmospheric soundscapes and the distinctive, soaring vocals of founder Ben Bridwell. Originally formed in Seattle, Washington, in 2004, the group has evolved through various lineup changes while maintaining a reputation for blending folk-rock sensibilities with expansive, reverb-drenched production. The band is currently based in Charleston, South Carolina.
Origins and Debut
The band was established by Ben Bridwell and Mat Brooke following the dissolution of their previous project, Carissa's Wierd. After gaining early momentum by opening for Iron & Wine in the Seattle area, the group caught the attention of Sub Pop Records. Their first official release, the Band of Horses Tour EP, was followed by their debut full-length album, Everything All the Time, in 2006. Produced by Phil Ek, the album earned critical praise and featured the breakout single "The Funeral," which became a defining track for the indie rock era.
Evolution and Relocation
Shortly after the release of their debut, co-founder Mat Brooke departed the group to focus on his project Grand Archives. This transition marked a significant shift for the band, as Bridwell took on a more central role in the songwriting and direction. In 2007, the group released Cease to Begin, which further solidified their commercial success. During this period, the band moved its base of operations from the Pacific Northwest to Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, a move that reflected a shift in the band's aesthetic toward Southern rock influences.
Mainstream Success and Discography
The band’s third studio album, Infinite Arms (2010), marked a transition to a more collaborative songwriting process and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Americana Album. This era saw the lineup stabilize with musicians including Ryan Monroe, Tyler Ramsay, Bill Reynolds, and Creighton Barrett. They followed this success with Mirage Rock in 2012, an album recorded with legendary producer Glyn Johns that showcased a raw, live-in-the-studio approach.
Recent Projects
In 2016, Band of Horses released Why Are You OK?, produced by Jason Lytle of Grandaddy. The record was noted for returning to the lush, melodic textures of their early work while exploring themes of domesticity and personal growth. Throughout their career, the band has remained a staple of the international festival circuit, known for evocative songwriting and dynamic live performances that bridge the gap between intimate folk and anthemic rock.
