History
The Twilight Sad
The Twilight Sad is an indie rock band formed in Kilsyth, Scotland, in late 2003. The current lineup consists of James Alexander Graham on vocals, Andy MacFarlane on guitar and keyboards, and Mark Devine on drums.
Early Sound and Formation
The band's initial approach involved creating lengthy, experimental pieces of music for their early gigs. They utilized a wide array of instruments and sound sources, including guitars, bass, drums, theremin, tape loops from films and old songs, effects pedals, toy keyboards, thumb pianos, saws, and computer game sounds. This eclectic mix was part of their effort to discover and develop a unique sonic identity. Following a few initial performances, the band opted for a more reclusive approach, focusing on songwriting and studio work.
Signing and Debut Album
In September 2005, The Twilight Sad recorded a demo that caught the attention of Fat Cat Records. Alex Knight, a co-founder of the label, saw the band perform and signed them. Their first official release was a US-only EP in November 2006, which, along with performances at CMJ '06 and SXSW '07, helped build their profile. Their debut album, Fourteen Autumns & Fifteen Winters, released in 2007, was recorded quickly and featured the band's earliest compositions. It garnered positive reviews within the independent music press, establishing them as a significant act in the emerging Scottish indie scene. While their recorded work featured layered melodies, their live performances were known for a more intense, visceral "wall of sound" experience, a deliberate intention from the band.
Evolution of Sound and Further Releases
In 2008, the band released the Here, It Never Snowed. Afterwards It Did EP, featuring reworked tracks from their debut and a cover of Daniel Johnston, an artist they cited as an influence. This period also saw the addition of Martin "Dok" Docherty on keyboards and guitar for live shows. To fund a tour with Mogwai, they released the compilation Killed My Parents and Hit the Road in late 2008, which included live recordings, acoustic tracks, unreleased material, demos, and covers of artists like The Smiths and Joy Division.
Their second album, Forget The Night Ahead, arrived in September 2009. For this record, the band experimented with natural reverb and early krautrock recording techniques, moving away from their reliance on effect pedals. During this time, bassist Craig Orzel departed, and Johnny Docherty joined for live performances. In 2010, they released The Wrong Car EP, featuring b-sides from the 'Forget' sessions and remixes by fellow Scottish bands Mogwai and Errors.
The third album, No One Can Ever Know (2012), marked a significant stylistic shift. The band largely abandoned delayed guitars in favor of vintage analog synthesizers, influenced by new wave. The album was recorded with production assistance from Andrew Weatherall.
The Twilight Sad has since released two more full-length albums: Nobody Wants to Be Here and Nobody Wants to Leave (2014) and It Won't Be Like This All the Time (2019), continuing to explore their evolving sound.
