History
The Long Ryders
The Long Ryders are an American band recognized for their contributions to alternative country and the Paisley Underground scene. Primarily active from 1983 to 1987, the group has experienced periodic reunions, including notable periods in 2004, 2009, and 2016. In 2019, they released new material and announced accompanying tour dates.
Formed in 1983, the band's members originated from various parts of the United States. Key figures included Kentucky native Sid Griffin, who shared lead vocals and guitar duties with Stephen McCarthy from Virginia. The Long Ryders achieved a UK hit in 1985 with their single "Looking for Lewis & Clark." Following their initial disbandment in 1987, the band reunited for performances at significant events such as the 2004 Glastonbury Festival.
The group marked their return to U.S. live performances after more than two decades with headline sets in 2009 at The Earl in Atlanta, Georgia, and in 2014 at the Troubadour in Los Angeles. In February 2019, The Long Ryders released Psychedelic Country Soul, their first album of new material in 33 years.
