History

Grand Ulena

Grand Ulena is an instrumental trio hailing from St. Louis, Missouri. The band formed in 2002 and features bassist Darin Gray (known for his work with On Fillmore and formerly Dazzling Killmen), guitarist Chris Trull (of Darling Little Jackhammer), and drummer Danny McClain (a member of Johnny Angel and Arrmy of Robots). Since their inception, they have been captivating audiences with their unique sound.

Debut Album: Gateway to Dignity

Their debut album, Gateway to Dignity, serves as a powerful synthesis of various musical influences accumulated over 15 years. The record draws from rock, rhythm, jazz, and their more experimental offshoots, creating a sound that is both challenging and compelling. Grand Ulena's music is characterized by disjointed rhythms delivered at high velocity, paired with fragmented and jagged melodies. The band explores repetition, complex structures, and a deliberate embrace of sonic "failure," juxtaposing intricate riffing with unconventional soloing. Extended instrumental techniques are masterfully woven into their song structures.

Critical Acclaim

Weasel Walter of Flying Luttenbachers described Grand Ulena's music, stating, "Grand Ulena masterfully bridge the gap between the uber-angular non-repetitive hyperstructuralism of the most rigid, martial modern classical composition and the traditional rock and roll power trio format while leaving everybody wondering what the hell just happened."
