Gallon Drunk

Gallon Drunk is a London-based band comprising James Johnston (vocals, guitar, organ, piano, harmonica), Terry Edwards (saxophone, organ), Leo Kurunis (bass), and Ian White (drums).

Formation and Early Recognition

Formed in 1988, Gallon Drunk quickly garnered attention for their distinctive sound. The band was admired by the late BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel, who famously remarked, "They don't sound like anyone else." Musician Nick Cave also offered a succinct endorsement, describing Gallon Drunk as "Cool as fuck." The original lineup featured James Johnston, Michael Delanian, and Joe Byfield.

Recent Activity and Collaborations

The band's album The Road Gets Darker From Here was released on May 7, 2012, in the UK and August 10, 2012, in the EU, through Clouds Hill Records. A 7-inch single, "You Made Me," accompanied by a new video, was released on April 16, 2012, in the UK. Gallon Drunk also maintained a touring schedule, including a UK tour in April 2012, with further European dates to be announced. Additionally, James Johnston has continued to tour with Lydia Lunch as part of their collaborative project, Big Sexy Noise.

James Johnston's Other Projects

Beyond Gallon Drunk, frontman James Johnston also served as a guitarist for Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds from 2003 to 2008. He participated in their Lollapalooza tour in 1994.
