History Codona

Codona was a free jazz and world fusion group which released three self-titled albums on the ECM label in 1978, 1980 and 1982.

The name of the group is derived from the first two letters of each of the member's first names: Collin Walcott (tabla, sitar, mbira, percussion), Don Cherry (trumpet, melodica, organ, Doussn'Gouni; hunter's guitar), and Naná Vasconcelos (berimbau, percussion, voice).

Multi-ethnic improvisational music, mostly stemming from Walcott's interest in Eastern Indian rhythms and Vasconcelos's Brazilian heritage. Cherry's experience with folk music of Scandinavia, Morocco, and Africa makes for a unique, major-league fusion.
