Biography Phil Thornalley

Philip Carden Thornalley was born in Worlington, Suffolk, England on January 5th, 1960.

Phil was the producer for The Cure on their fourth album, Pornography. After Simon Gallup quit in 1982, he filled in as their bassist during the recording of Japanese Whispers, which he also helped produce as well, and The Cure's first live album, Concert. Robert Smith would later cite his work for engineering with The Psychedelic Furs as the motivation for their choice in Thornalley.

Phil quit after Simon returned in 1985, and went on to work with Johnny Hates Jazz initially as an engineer for their debut LP, Turn Back the Clock. When vocalist Clark Datchler departed from Johnny Hates Jazz in 1988, he became the band's new lead singer. Phil also released a solo album that same year called Swamp. In 1991, Johnny Hates Jazz released the album Tall Stories with Phil on lead vocals, but it was a commercial failure.

Since then Phil has worked primarily as record producer for other artists, notably on the Natalie Imbruglia hit, "Torn", which he co-wrote.
