History
Animals as Leaders
Animals as Leaders is an instrumental progressive metal project founded in 2007 by guitarist Tosin Abasi in Washington, D.C. The band's unique sound blends technical proficiency with complex compositions, establishing them as pioneers in modern progressive metal.
Formation and Debut
The project emerged from the dissolution of Abasi's previous band, Reflux. Initially hesitant to pursue a solo career, Abasi was encouraged by Prosthetic Records, who recognized his exceptional guitar talent. The band's name, "Animals as Leaders," draws inspiration from Daniel Quinn's novel *Ishmael*, serving as a philosophical reminder of shared existence.
The self-titled debut album, Animals as Leaders, was released on April 28, 2009. Abasi performed all guitar and bass parts, while Misha Mansoor contributed programmed drums and synthesized effects. The album garnered critical acclaim for its innovative approach to heavy music.
Evolution and Subsequent Releases
The band's lineup solidified with the addition of Javier Reyes on rhythm guitar and Navene Koperweis on drums for their second album, Weightless, released on November 8, 2011. Following extensive touring, Koperweis departed and was succeeded by Matt Garstka on drums.
In late 2012, Animals as Leaders signed with Sumerian Records. Their subsequent album, produced by Misha Mansoor, was released in 2013. The band continued to explore new sonic territories with the release of The Madness Of Many in 2016 and Parrhesia in mid-2022.
