History
Periphery: A Progressive Metal Powerhouse
Periphery, an American progressive metal band, was formed in Bethesda, Maryland, in 2005. Guitarist Misha Mansoor founded the group, initially building a significant online following through platforms like Soundclick, Meshuggah and John Petrucci forums, and sevenstring.org. Mansoor was recognized early on for his self-produced audio work, often utilizing a home computer and a Pod XT. This production approach carried over into his personal project, Bulb, which predated Periphery and often shared material with the band.
Evolution and Early Years (2005 - 2009)
Between 2005 and 2009, Periphery experimented with various vocalists, including Jake Veredika, Casey Sabol, and Chris Barretto. During this period, their sound evolved from nu-metal influences towards a more experimental style characterized by innovative production techniques. In 2009, the band announced their signing with Sumerian Records, leading to the release of their debut full-length album.
Periphery has been a consistent presence on the touring circuit since 2008, sharing stages with notable acts such as DevilDriver, Emmure, Veil of Maya, Animals as Leaders, God Forbid, The Dillinger Escape Plan, and Fear Factory.
Spencer Sotelo and the Self-Titled Debut (2010 onwards)
The band's self-titled debut album, Periphery, was released on April 20, 2010, through Sumerian Records. The album achieved commercial success, debuting at #128 on the Billboard Top 200 and reaching #2 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. In January 2010, Spencer Sotelo was confirmed as the band's new vocalist, following speculation about lineup changes.
