Sophie Michelle Ellis-Bextor (born 10 April 1979) is an English singer, songwriter, and former model. She initially gained recognition in the late 1990s as the lead vocalist for the indie rock band Theaudience. Following the band's dissolution, Ellis-Bextor embarked on a solo career, finding considerable success in the early 2000s. Her musical style is characterized by a blend of mainstream pop, disco, nu-disco, and influences from 1980s electronic music.
Ellis-Bextor's solo debut album, Read My Lips, was released in 2001. It achieved significant commercial success, reaching number two on the UK Albums Chart and earning a double platinum certification from the British Phonographic Industry (BPI). The album also found international acclaim, selling over 2 million copies globally and spawning four singles, three of which reached the top three in the UK. In 2003, Read My Lips received the Edison Award for "Best Dance Album".
