History
Jordan Terrell Carter, known professionally as Playboi Carti, is a defining figure in modern hip hop and a primary architect of the "rage" microgenre. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Carti has earned international recognition not only for his experimental vocal styles but also for his significant influence on contemporary fashion and underground culture.
Early Career and the Atlanta Underground
Carti began his musical journey in 2011 using the moniker Sir Cartier. This early stage name reflected his burgeoning interest in luxury brands, a theme that would continue to evolve throughout his career. In 2013, he rebranded as Playboi Carti and joined the independent collective Awful Records. During this period, he worked closely with the producer Ethereal, whose atmospheric beats helped Carti cultivate a dedicated local following. He also frequently collaborated with his cousin, the rapper UnoTheActivist, on early underground tracks such as "Whole Thang."
Rise to Mainstream Prominence
After graduating from high school in 2014, Carti moved to New York City, a transition that proved pivotal for his career. He formed a connection with A$AP Rocky and became affiliated with Rocky’s creative agency, AWGE. The release of the singles "Broke Boi" and "Fetti" served as his breakout moment, turning him into a viral sensation within the digital rap landscape. By late 2016, his rising trajectory led to a major label deal with Interscope Records.
In April 2017, Carti released his self-titled debut commercial mixtape. The project featured the hit singles "Magnolia" and "wokeuplikethis*," which propelled him into the mainstream. These tracks defined the "SoundCloud rap" era, characterized by hypnotic production and a focus on flow and rhythm over traditional lyricism.
The Experimental Shift: Die Lit
Carti followed his initial success with his first studio album, Die Lit, released in May 2018. The album was a critical and commercial success, featuring collaborations with artists like Travis Scott, Nicki Minaj, and Lil Uzi Vert. On Die Lit, Carti began to experiment more heavily with his vocal delivery, introducing high-pitched inflections and unconventional ad-libs that would become his signature. Tracks like "FlatBed Freestyle" showcased his willingness to push the boundaries of the genre, prioritizing mood and texture.
The Opium Label and Whole Lotta Red
In 2019, Carti founded his own record label, Opium, based in Atlanta. This move allowed him to mentor a new generation of artists and further establish his aesthetic vision. On Christmas Day 2020, he released his highly anticipated second studio album, Whole Lotta Red. The project marked a drastic stylistic shift, embracing a raw, aggressive sound heavily influenced by punk rock, heavy metal, and gothic imagery.
Initially met with mixed reviews due to its abrasive nature, Whole Lotta Red eventually achieved cult status. It is now widely regarded as one of the most influential albums of the decade, sparking the "rage" sound that dominated the underground rap scene in the years following its release. During this era, Carti adopted a darker, more theatrical persona, incorporating vampire-inspired visuals and industrial fashion into his public identity.
The Evolution into MUSIC
Following the release of Whole Lotta Red, Carti entered a period of relative silence, maintaining his relevance through mystery and rare public appearances. He focused on expanding the Opium brand, signing and developing artists such as Ken Carson, Destroy Lonely, and Homixide Gang. These artists adopted Carti’s chaotic, futuristic aesthetic, solidifying Opium as a dominant force in the new underground.
In March 2025, Carti released his third studio album, titled MUSIC. The album represented a natural evolution of the sonic experiments he began years prior. Featuring dense production and a more polished yet still cryptic vocal approach, MUSIC confirmed Carti’s status as a transformative artist. Rather than following industry trends, Carti continues to build a distinct cultural and musical universe that bridges the gap between hip hop, punk, and avant-garde performance art.
