History
Nova Twins: A Sonic Force of Dual Power
Nova Twins, the dynamic duo comprised of Amy Love (vocals/guitar) and Georgia South (bass/backing vocals), have carved a distinctive niche in the music landscape with their potent blend of "sonic mayhem," compelling basslines, and unforgettable hooks. Their music is characterized by Love's urban lyricism and powerful vocal delivery, underpinned by South's thunderous basslines and innovative use of effects pedals. This combination creates a "rifftastic" sound that embodies a strong sense of female empowerment.
From Childhood Friends to Sonic Pioneers
Love and South, close friends since childhood, began their musical journey together, often finding themselves on the same performance bills. With diverse backgrounds – Love of Iranian and Nigerian descent, and South of Jamaican and Australian heritage – they formed their first band, BRAATS, in 2014, releasing the track "Bad Bitches." By the end of that year, they had rebranded as Nova Twins and released their debut song "Bassline Bitch." This track caught the attention of the independent label Robotunes, leading to the release of their self-titled EP in 2016.
Rising Through the Ranks
Following a notable performance at the French festival Rencontres Trans Musicales in late 2016, Nova Twins spent much of 2017 on extensive tours across multiple countries. Their profile significantly rose when they supported Prophets of Rage, earning a ringing endorsement from Tom Morello, who dubbed them "the best band you've never heard of." Since then, they have shared stages with notable acts such as Wolf Alice, Little Simz, Dream Wife, Black Honey, and Skunk Anansie. In 2017, they also launched their own custom clothing line, Bad Stitches, alongside self-releasing the singles "Thelma & Louise" and "Mood Swings."
Debut Album and Beyond
The year 2018 saw Nova Twins independently release the singles "Hit Girl" and "Lose Your Head" while continuing their global touring, including a performance at the Afropunk festival in Brooklyn. Their debut album began to take shape with producer Jim Abbiss towards the end of the year. In 2019, they toured with Fever 333 and again with Prophets of Rage. Previews of their forthcoming album included the singles "Devil's Face" and "Vortex," both accompanied by music videos. Their growing influence was further recognized through collaborations with brands like Dr. Martens for a global campaign. Later that year, they announced their signing to Fever 333's label, 333 Wreckords Crew.
Critical Acclaim and Recognition
Nova Twins' debut album, Who Are the Girls?, was released on February 28, 2020, and garnered positive reviews from publications like Kerrang! and Crash. The band's impact was acknowledged when they won Best U.K. Breakthrough Band at the 2020 Heavy Music Awards. Their sophomore album, Supernova, released on June 17, 2022, achieved critical success, earning a nomination for the prestigious Mercury Prize.
