History

Halsey, born Ashley Nicolette Frangipane, is an American singer-songwriter recognized for her distinctive vocal style and introspective lyrical themes. Her stage name is both an anagram of her given name and a tribute to the Halsey Street subway station in Brooklyn. Outside of her musical career, she has been a vocal advocate for mental health awareness, suicide prevention, and the rights of sexual assault survivors.

Early Career and Breakthrough

Halsey first gained attention through social media before signing with Astralwerks. In 2014, she released her debut EP, Room 93, which set the stage for her first full-length studio album, Badlands (2015). The album debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 and was eventually certified platinum by the RIAA, cementing her status as a rising star in the alternative pop scene.

In 2016, Halsey’s profile reached new heights when she featured on The Chainsmokers' single "Closer." The track became a global phenomenon, topping charts in the United States, the United Kingdom, and numerous other territories. This success transitioned into her second studio album, Hopeless Fountain Kingdom (2017), which featured the hit single "Now or Never."

Artistic Evolution and Major Releases

Manic and Global Success

Halsey's third studio album, Manic, was released in January 2020. The record was preceded by successful singles such as "Nightmare" and "Graveyard." Manic showcased a more vulnerable and genre-fluid approach to songwriting, further establishing her as a versatile artist. The album was supported by an extensive world tour and continued her streak of commercial and critical success.

If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power

In August 2021, Halsey released her fourth studio album, If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power. Produced by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross of Nine Inch Nails, the album was a departure into more industrial and alternative sounds. The release was accompanied by a high-concept IMAX theatrical film directed by Colin Tilley, which explored the complexities of motherhood and identity.

Halsey has received significant industry recognition, including four Billboard Music Awards, four iHeartRadio Music Awards, and a GLAAD Media Award. Her career achievements also include a MTV Video Music Award, a Guinness World Record, and a Grammy Award nomination, marking her as one of the most influential pop artists of her generation.
