History
Black Country, New Road
Black Country, New Road, often abbreviated as BCNR or BC,NR, is an English experimental rock band formed in Cambridgeshire in 2018. The current lineup features Tyler Hyde (bass, vocals), May Kershaw (keyboard, accordion, vocals), Georgia Ellery (violin, vocals), Lewis Evans (saxophone, flute, vocals), Charlie Wayne (drums, backing vocals), and Luke Mark (guitar, backing vocals). The band's initial two albums featured lead vocalist Isaac Wood, who departed in 2022.
Musical Style and Influences
The band's sound is characterized by its experimental rock, post-punk, and post-rock elements. Critics have drawn comparisons to artists such as Slint, Arcade Fire, and black midi.
Formation and Early Years
The core members of Black Country, New Road originated from the band Nervous Conditions. Following the disbandment of Nervous Conditions in early 2018 due to allegations against its vocalist, the founding members reformed as Black Country, New Road, without the previous vocalist and drummer. The addition of guitarist Luke Mark solidified the lineup.
Debut and Critical Acclaim
The band first garnered attention with their 2019 singles "Athens, France" and "Sunglasses." Their debut album, For the first time, released in 2021, was met with widespread critical acclaim, earning a Mercury Prize nomination and reaching number 4 on the UK Albums Chart. Their second album, Ants from Up There, released in 2022, also received significant critical praise, reaching number 3 on the UK Albums Chart. This release occurred just days after Isaac Wood's departure from the band, citing mental health reasons.
Recent Work
In the period following Wood's departure, the band developed new material, culminating in the release of their live album, Live at Bush Hall, in 2023. Their first studio album since Wood's exit, Forever Howlong, is scheduled for release in April 2025.
