An expanded version of the groundbreaking racially integrated Benny Goodman Quartet, chiefly notable for incorporating pioneering electric guitarist Charlie Christian. This made it the first group in American jazz to give a guitar solo instrument space since the very different-sounding and much quieter handful of 1920s groups to use the acoustic instrument. Christian's progressive tendencies also meant the group foreshadowed bebop.
