History

The Origins of Kid Francescoli

Kid Francescoli is the electro-pop project founded by Marseille-based musician Mathieu Hocine in 2000. Originally a solo venture, the project expanded into a collaborative ensemble with the addition of vocalist Laetitia Abello, keyboardist David Borras, and bassist Olivier Scalia. The group began performing live in 2004, establishing a presence in the French indie music scene through their early club dates and festival appearances.

Musical Style and Influences

The project is characterized by its focus on melody and intimate lyrical themes. Writing in both English and Italian, Hocine explores the complexities of early adulthood, ranging from youthful uncertainty to the introspective reflections of a woman approaching her thirties. Musically, Kid Francescoli draws significant inspiration from the atmospheric textures of Air and the indie-rock sensibilities of Grandaddy.

The group’s sound is also deeply rooted in the cinematic heritage of Italy. The legendary soundtracks of Ennio Morricone and the classic aesthetic of Cinecittà serve as primary influences, blending Mediterranean warmth with modern electronic production. This combination of tenacious refrains and heartfelt instrumentals has become a hallmark of their discography.

Live Performances and National Recognition

Kid Francescoli gained significant momentum as a live act following a breakout performance at the Marsatac festival in 2005. This success paved the way for their first national tour in May 2006, which saw the group performing in major French cities including Paris, Marseille, Bordeaux, Rennes, and Nice. During this period, they shared the stage with notable contemporary artists such as Sébastien Schuller and Troy Von Balthazar, further solidifying their reputation within the European electronic and pop landscapes.
