History

Cosmic Gate

Cosmic Gate is a German electronic music duo, known for their contributions to the trance and progressive trance genres. The project was originally formed in 1999 by Claus Terhoeven (also known as Nic Chagall) and Stefan Bossems (DJ Bossi), both from Krefeld.

Early Career and Breakthrough

The duo's early releases included singles such as "The Drums," "Exploration of Space," and "Mental Atmosphere." They also gained attention for their remix of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," which incorporated samples from the film *The Wizard of Oz*. However, it was the 2001 UK release of their single "Fire Wire" that significantly elevated their profile in the electronic music scene.

Musical Evolution

Over the years, Cosmic Gate's musical style evolved, moving from harder-edged trance towards a more refined yet still energetic sound. Following their third studio album, Earth Mover, the duo began to incorporate more progressive trance elements into their music.

Remixes and Collaborations

Cosmic Gate has produced remixes for numerous prominent DJs, including Tiësto, Armin van Buuren, and Ferry Corsten. They have also performed alongside many of the genre's leading artists, such as W&W and Hardwell.

Live Performances and Future

The duo has a prolific performance history, having played over 1,000 gigs and typically performing between 100 and 130 shows annually. Their performances have taken them to renowned venues like Ministry of Sound, The Guvernment, and Privilege Ibiza. In February 2026, it was announced that Stefan Bossems would retire from touring and depart from the group. Claus Terhoeven will continue to perform and release music under the Cosmic Gate name.
