Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark: A Synth-Pop Legacy
Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD) is a pioneering synth-pop group formed in the Wirral, United Kingdom. Founded in 1978 by Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys, the duo had previously been active in other musical projects, including The Id. The band's early lineup solidified with the addition of drummer Malcolm Holmes and saxophonist Martin Cooper.
Formation and Early Success
McCluskey and Humphreys formed the creative nucleus of OMD until a split in 1989. McCluskey continued to record and tour under the OMD name with a revised lineup until 1996. Meanwhile, Humphreys, Holmes, and Cooper embarked on a new venture as "The Listening Pool."
The group achieved significant chart success, with "Enola Gay" becoming their first of seven UK Top 10 singles. Their sole US hit, "If You Leave," gained prominence through its inclusion in the soundtrack for the 1985 film Pretty In Pink.
Reformation and New Material
In late December 2005, OMD announced their reformation for 2006, signaling a return to live performances and the creation of new music. Rehearsals commenced in the summer of 2006, featuring the original 1980s members: Andy McCluskey, Paul Humphreys, Malcolm Holmes, and Martin Cooper. The planned "Architecture & Morality" tour for late 2006 was subsequently rescheduled to early 2007.
The tour finally took place in the spring of 2007, showcasing the entirety of the Architecture & Morality album alongside a set of greatest hits. Each concert famously concluded with a powerful rendition of the B-side and fan favorite, "The Romance of the Telescope."
Continued Evolution
Following the successful reunion, OMD continued to release new material. Plans materialized for a documentary DVD, a live DVD capturing the 2007 tour, and a new studio album. Their 13th studio album, History of Modern, was released in 2010.
The band's subsequent studio albums include English Electric, released on April 5, 2013, followed by The Punishment Of Luxury on September 1, 2017. Most recently, their 14th studio album, Bauhaus Staircase, was released on October 27, 2023.
