History

Circa Waves is a prominent British indie rock band formed in Liverpool in 2013. The group consists of lead vocalist and guitarist Kieran Shudall, guitarist Joe Falconer, bassist Sam Rourke, and drummer Colin Jones. Known for their infectious melodies and energetic live performances, they quickly rose to prominence as one of the leading voices in the modern UK indie scene.

Breakthrough with Young Chasers

The band first gained attention in late 2013 with the release of their double-A side single, "Get Away" / "Good For Me." This was followed by the Young Chasers EP in 2014, released through Transgressive Records. Their momentum culminated in the 2015 release of their debut studio album, Young Chasers, produced by Dan Grech. The record was characterized by its bright, guitar-driven sound and featured the hit singles "T-Shirt Weather" and "Fossils." The album's success established the band as a staple of summer festival circuits and earned comparisons to influential indie acts of the previous decade.

Evolution and Sonic Maturity

In 2017, Circa Waves released their second album, Different Creatures. Produced by Alan Moulder alongside Shudall, the record marked a departure from the breezy aesthetics of their debut, opting for a heavier, grittier sound with more introspective lyrics. Singles such as "Wake Up," "Fire That Burns," and "Stuck" showcased a band willing to experiment with darker textures and orchestral elements like violins and cellos, signaling a significant growth in their songwriting.

Their third effort, What's It Like Over There?, arrived in 2019. The album saw the band further expanding their sonic palette, incorporating elements of pop-rock and piano-led arrangements. Supported by singles like "Movies" and "Times Won't Change Me," the record was a commercial success, peaking at number 10 on the UK Albums Chart and receiving praise for its experimental spirit.

The Sad Happy Project

The band continued their prolific output in 2020 with the ambitious double album Sad Happy. Released in two parts—the "Happy" side in January and the "Sad" side in March—the project was designed to reflect the emotional fluctuations and insecurities of the modern, tech-saturated age. Lead single "Jacqueline" became another radio favorite, reinforcing the band's reputation for crafting anthemic indie pop while tackling the complexities of contemporary life.
