History
Formed in 2011 in Brixton, South London, Fat White Family has earned a reputation as one of the most provocative and uncompromising acts in the British independent music scene. Led by brothers Lias and Nathan Saoudi alongside guitarist Saul Adamczewski, the band is known for a confrontational aesthetic and lyrics that explore transgressive subject matter.
Origins and Champagne Holocaust
The group’s foundations were built on the members' previous musical ventures. The Saoudi brothers performed in the band The Saudis, while Adamczewski was formerly a member of the indie-pop group The Metros. Fat White Family’s debut album, Champagne Holocaust, was released in 2013. The record introduced their signature blend of grimy post-punk, country, and garage rock, garnering critical attention for its raw production and subversive themes.
Songs for Our Mothers and Side Projects
In 2016, the band released their second studio album, Songs for Our Mothers. The project continued their exploration of challenging topics, ranging from historical figures to domestic bleakness. During this era, Lias Saoudi and Saul Adamczewski also collaborated with the Sheffield-based duo Eccentronic Research Council to form the side project The Moonlandingz, which allowed them to experiment with psychedelic pop structures and expanded their reach within the alternative music community.
Serfs Up! and Continued Evolution
The band signed with Domino Recording Company for their third album, Serfs Up!, released in 2019. This record signaled a significant shift in their sound, incorporating more polished production, electronic elements, and diverse influences such as disco and choral arrangements. Despite the more melodic approach, the band retained their characteristic lyrical bite. In 2024, they released Forgiveness Is Yours, an album that further solidified their position as enduring and unpredictable figures in contemporary rock music, continuing to push the boundaries of their creative output.
