History

Ilmiliekki Quartet

Formed in 2002, the Ilmiliekki Quartet quickly established themselves as a significant force in Finnish jazz. Within six months of their inception, the ensemble, comprising Verneri Pohjola, Tuomo Prättälä, Olavi Louhivuori, and Antti Lötjönen, triumphed at the Nordic jazz ensemble competition, earning them the title of Young Nordic Jazz Comets.

Early Recognition and Acclaim

The quartet's debut album, "March of the Alpha Males," released by TUM Records, garnered critical attention, receiving a nomination for the Jazz Emma, Finland's equivalent of the Grammy Award, for Best Jazz Album of 2003. Further accolades followed in 2004 when the band was recognized as Young Artist of the Year by Finland Festivals. In the same year, trumpeter Verneri Pohjola was individually honored as the Pori Jazz Festival's Young Artist. To cap off a successful year, Ilmiliekki Quartet was awarded the prestigious Teosto Prize by the Finnish Composers Copyright Society at the end of 2004, solidifying their position as leading young talent in Finnish jazz.

Musicality and Vision

While trumpeter Verneri Pohjola (born 1977) is often highlighted as a standout soloist in reviews of Ilmiliekki's performances, the band's true strength lies in their cohesive ensemble playing and dynamic interaction. Each of the four musicians is a prominent figure in their own right, united by a shared vision, courage, and confidence that fuels their creation of ambitious and impressive music.

Repertoire and Performance

The Ilmiliekki Quartet's musical offerings primarily feature original compositions penned by the band members. However, they also demonstrate their versatility by performing covers from a diverse range of artists, including Björk, Ornette Coleman, Tom Waits, Radiohead, and Suzanne Vega. Audiences consistently find themselves captivated by the quartet's unique stage presence and the magic they create during their performances.
