Liima
Liima is a musical project formed by Finnish percussionist Tatu Rönkkö and the core members of the Danish band Efterklang: Mads Brauer, Casper Clausen, and Rasmus Stolberg. Rönkkö has previously collaborated with Efterklang.
Formation and Early Performances
The band made its live debut with a two-week residency at Pekka Kuusisto's Our Festival in Finland in July 2014. Later that autumn, Liima spent nine days in Berlin writing new material. These compositions were first presented at a private event at Vox-Ton Studio in Berlin and subsequently at the Rewire Festival in The Hague.
Debut Album 'ii'
The year 2015 saw Liima in Istanbul, where they created new music that premiered at two concerts at Salon Iksv. Further performances followed in Berlin, Aarhus, Aalborg, and Copenhagen. In October, the band, alongside producer Jonas Verwijnen, returned to Vox-Ton Studio in Berlin. There, they recorded their debut album, ii, in just three days, performing all parts live without overdubs. The album was mixed to tape by Francesco Donatello.
Released on March 18, 2016, via 4AD, ii features songs conceived during week-long residencies in Finland, Berlin, Istanbul, and Madeira. Each location influenced the album's sonic landscape, sometimes incorporating field recordings and samples. Each residency concluded with a live performance of the newly written material.
The single "Amerika" preceded the album's release in January 2016.
