Tuomari Nurmio is the stage name of Hannu Juhani Nurmio (born 1950 in Helsinki), a Finnish rock singer and songwriter. Since his debut, Nurmio has been recognized as one of Finland's most distinctive singer-songwriters. His lyrical work is characterized by unique and striking metaphors and phrases, some of which have entered everyday Finnish conversation. His initial four albums are particularly regarded today as seminal works.
The early albums fuse American country, blues, and roots music traditions with the unconventional energy of new wave. These songs often feature romantic and humorous themes, interspersed with observations on the darker aspects of urban existence. During the 1990s, Nurmio's musical style evolved towards a rougher, more gravelly sound, drawing comparisons to Tom Waits. In the 2000s, he frequently performed as a duo with a guitarist, accompanied by Markku Hillilä on drums. His most recent musical partnership is with the band Alamaailman Vasarat.
