History
Mind Odyssey
Formation and Early Years
Mind Odyssey emerged from the merger of two Berlin metal bands: the east Berlin group "Merlin" and the west Berlin group "Gracious Violence." The band was founded by Mario Le Mole (formerly of Merlin and Gracious Violence), Dan Uhden (Merlin), Rocco Stellmacher (Merlin), and Volker Schultz (Gracious Violence).
Debut and International Recognition
With the support of producer Frank Bornemann (Eloy), Mind Odyssey recorded a demo at Horus Sound-Studios, a studio known for its work with artists like Helloween, Victory, and Running Wild. The demo received a highly positive reception, particularly in Japan, where the prominent rock magazine "BURRN!" published rave reviews. This international success fueled growing domestic interest, leading to the band's first record deal.
"Keep It All Turning" and Lineup Changes
Under the name Mind Odyssey, their debut album, "Keep It All Turning," was released in the spring of 1993. Following this release, the band underwent a lineup change, with Victor Smolski (later of RAGE) joining. Smolski took on responsibilities for songwriting, guitars, and keyboards.
"Schizophenia" and European Tour
In the early summer of 1995, studio work commenced for their second album, titled "Schizophenia." The production for this record was handled by Hermann Frank (formerly of Accept and Victory). An accompanying music video was produced and aired on MTV and Viva TV. In 1996, the band expanded its roster with the addition of Jan Keller on bass and Andreas Dirksmeier on keyboards. After numerous performances across Germany, Mind Odyssey embarked on a European tour supporting Vicious Rumors, promoting the "Schizophenia" album.
"Nailed To The Shade" and Musical Exploration
The year 1997 saw the recording and production of their next album, "Nailed To The Shade," by Charly Czajkowski. This album, along with a subsequent European tour alongside Savatage, provided Mind Odyssey with a platform to showcase their experimental approach to modern melodic power metal.
"Signs" and Progressive Influences
By April 1999, the band had recorded their fourth album, "Signs," at VPS-Studios in Hamm, Germany, a studio frequented by artists such as RAGE and SILENT FORCE. On "Signs," Mind Odyssey blended progressive power metal with orchestral elements, delivering what is considered their most accomplished work to date.
Return in 2008
After a hiatus, Mind Odyssey announced their return in 2008. Mario Le Mole, Victor Smolski, and Dan Uhden reunited to produce a new album, continuing the band's story after 15 years.
