History

Quando Quango

Quando Quango was a British electronic music group active for approximately six years, leaving behind a notable album and several influential 12-inch dance releases. Their sound has been described as a unique fusion, blending the experimental electronic textures of Kraftwerk with the polyrhythmic energy of Fela Kuti, all filtered through the vibrant musical landscape of Manchester and Rotterdam. The group was part of the post-punk electronica movement, with member Mike Pickering contributing his extensive knowledge of soul, disco, reggae, and pop to enrich their productions.

Key Releases and Dancefloor Impact

For fans of dance music, Quando Quango's legacy is cemented by tracks like "Love Tempo," characterized by its driving, syncopated basslines. "Genius" captured a palpable party atmosphere, while "Atom Rock" offered a distinct boogie sound. The track "Tingle" became known for its embodiment of the Quando dance manifesto, and "Go Exciting" featured Fela-inspired basslines paired with Latin-flavored lyrics, reportedly resonating with clubgoers in New York's Latino scene. Their music often evoked a sense of future sounds, drawing inspiration from the diverse and exciting musical currents of the early 1980s.

Diverse Musical Lineups

The varied backgrounds of Quando Quango's members contributed significantly to the group's eclectic approach. Bassist Barry Johnson brought experience from Sweet Sensation and The Twelfth Tribe of Israel, later joining reggae legends Aswad. Percussionist Simon Topping was involved with A Certain Ratio (ACR) and honed his skills through salsa percussion classes in New York before forming the Latin-influenced house group T-Coy. Original drummer Reinier Rietveld was simultaneously a member of the Dutch cult band Spasmodique. Later drummer Adam Ryan-Carter went on to a successful career as a songwriter for various pop artists. The group also benefited from the contributions of brothers Donald (also of ACR) and Derek Johnson (of 52nd Street), who provided significant bass, guitar, and percussion work.

Quando Quango was signed to the renowned Factory Records label in Manchester, UK.
