Begoña Olavide is a recognized pioneer in the revival and performance of Spanish music from the 13th and 14th centuries, with a particular focus on the musical heritage of Al-Andalus, the period of Moorish rule in Iberia. She has expressed a deep fascination with the confluence of Islamic, Christian, and Jewish cultures that characterized Spain during this era.

Olavide is a virtuoso performer on the psaltery, also known as the qanun. Her journey with this instrument began after discovering what she described as a "forgotten" instrument. As noted in the liner notes for her album "Toques in Tiempo," she found that "There was no-one who knew how it should be played, nor what possibilities it possessed." Prior to mastering the psaltery, her primary instrument was the flute.
