Red Onion Jazz Babies

The Red Onion Jazz Babies were a short-lived but historically significant jazz ensemble, primarily known for a series of recordings made in the mid-1920s. These sessions were organized by the prolific pianist and bandleader Clarence Williams.

The ensemble featured a remarkable roster of musicians who would become giants of jazz. Notably, Lil Hardin-Armstrong participated, having recently relocated east to be near her husband, Louis Armstrong, who had joined the Fletcher Henderson Orchestra the previous month. The Red Onion Jazz Babies sessions hold particular importance as they mark the first time Sidney Bechet and Louis Armstrong were recorded together. This collaboration brought together two of the most influential clarinetists and improvisers of the era.
