History
PVT
PVT, originally known as Pivot, is an Australian electronic rock band formed in 1999 by Laurence Pike (drums, percussion) and Richard Pike (guitar, production). Dave Miller (electronics) joined in 2005, coinciding with the release of their debut album, 'Make Me Love You'.
Early Years and International Recognition
In 2008, the band signed with the UK label Warp Records, releasing the EP 'In the Blood' under the name Pivot in May. Their first international release, 'O Soundtrack My Heart', also as Pivot, followed in August 2008. The album was recorded at BJB Studios in Sydney with Scott Horscroft and mixed by John McEntire (known for his work with Tortoise and The Sea and Cake) at Soma Electronic Music Studios in Chicago.
Extensive Touring and Notable Performances
The year 2008 was marked by extensive touring across Europe and the UK. PVT performed at the Meltdown festival alongside Yellow Magic Orchestra, at Glastonbury, and were invited to support bands like The Arctic Monkeys, Sigur Rós, and Gary Numan on their Australian tours. Live performances often featured intricate arrangements, including a rendition of Talking Heads' "I Zimbra" that utilized live sampling to replicate up to twelve parts. A live version of this cover was included on the B-side of their 'O Soundtrack My Heart' tour-only 7-inch single.
Further Collaborations and Name Change
In June 2009, PVT was invited to perform at the Luminous Festival at the Sydney Opera House, curated by Brian Eno. During this period, they were also completing their third studio album with engineer Burke Reid in Sydney. The band contributed a cover of Grizzly Bear's "Colorado" to the Warp20 (Recreated) compilation, and their song "Fool In Rain" was covered by Scott Herren's project, Diamond Watch Wrists.
'Church With No Magic' and 'Homosapien'
In 2010, the band officially changed their name from Pivot to PVT following a legal claim from an American progressive metal band of the same name. Their first release under the new moniker was 'Church With No Magic', released in August 2010. PVT collaborated with Ivan Vizintin (engineer and former frontman of Ghoul) and Ben Hillier (mixing) for their third studio album, 'Homosapien', which was released on February 11th, 2013, via Felte Records.
'New Spirit'
Their subsequent album, 'New Spirit', was released in February 2017, again with collaborations from Vizintin and Hillier.
