Systematic was a hard rock and nu metal band hailing from San Jose, California. Their career trajectory took a significant turn when Lars Ulrich, the drummer for Metallica, discovered the band after hearing one of their demo tapes. This led to an immediate signing with Ulrich's label, The Music Company (distributed by Elektra), and the release of their debut album, Somewhere in Between, in 2001.
In 2003, Systematic released their second album, Pleasure to Burn. This period also saw notable lineup changes, with Johny Bechtel joining on bass and Paul Bostaph, formerly of Slayer, taking over drumming duties.
