History
Def FX
Def FX was an Australian electronic-metal-pop group active from 1990 to 1997. The band was fronted by Fiona Horne, a media personality and practicing Wiccan, and visual artist Sean Lowry.
Early Years and Independent Releases
The group began by touring extensively and releasing several critically acclaimed EPs on the independent label Phantom Records. These early independent releases were later compiled onto the album Baptism.
Major Label Debut and Chart Success
Def FX made their album debut in 1992 with Light Speed Collision, released on EMI. This album included the singles "Space Time Disco" and "No Time for Nowhere." Their 1994 release, the Post Moronic EP, featured the Triple J hit "Masses Like Asses" and marked their first entry onto the ARIA charts, peaking at number 43. Following this success, EMI released the band from their contract and granted them full rights to all their material recorded for the label.
Independent Label and Thematic Exploration
In 1995, Def FX established their own record label. Through this new venture, they reissued much of their previous work and released the album Ritual Eternal. This album incorporated significant themes from Fiona Horne's Wiccan beliefs and Indian mythology. They followed up in November of the same year with the Psychoactive Summer EP, which included live renditions of several songs from Ritual Eternal. The EP's title track, leaning towards a more pop-oriented sound, gained considerable airplay on both Triple J and commercial radio stations.
Final Album and Dissolution
The band's final and most commercially successful album, Magick, was released in 1996. It featured tracks such as "Psychoactive Summer" and "Spell On You" and integrated more pop and electronic elements into their signature sound than any of their previous work. However, in May 1997, Sean Lowry departed from the band, leading the remaining members to decide on dissolving Def FX. Following the band's end, Fiona Horne authored a book on Wicca, while other members formed the band Primary.
