History

Arcana (Neoclassical Darkwave)

Formation and Early Years

Arcana, a prominent neoclassical darkwave band from Sweden, was formed in 1993. The group's signature sound is characterized by a fusion of classically and medievally inspired instrumental music, augmented by occasional vocals, creating a richly atmospheric and dark sonic landscape. Initially, the band's lineup featured Peter Bjärgö and Ida Bengtsson. For their first three releases, Bengtsson served as the lead female vocalist, contributing significantly to the band's growing international fanbase.

Evolution and Label Independence

Since 1996, Arcana has been recognized as a leading act within its genre. Peter Bjärgö, then known as Pettersson, began crafting Arcana's music after years of diverse musical exploration, drawing inspiration from a romanticized view of the Middle Ages. In 2001, Ann-Mari Thim succeeded Ida Bengtsson as the lead female vocalist, with Stefan Eriksson joining on keyboards and additional instruments. Following their fourth release, Bjärgö departed from the Cold Meat Industry label, Arcana's original label, to establish his own imprint, Erebus Odora. This move was driven by a desire to preserve the personal essence of his music, maintaining creative independence and his distinct sound.

Expanding the Ensemble and Live Performances

The band's dynamic continued to evolve with the addition of Peter's wife, Cecilia Bjärgö, on vocals in 2003, and percussionist Mattias Borgh in 2006. By 2010, Arcana expanded its live presence significantly when Núria Luis and Sergio Gamez Martinez joined the ensemble. Their contributions have been instrumental in ensuring the music's authentic, backtrack-free execution during live performances. Luis and Martinez are now considered full members, despite the logistical challenges posed by their residency in Spain. Their musicality and extensive live performance experience have proven invaluable, overcoming any potential obstacles.

Musical Direction and Current Status

At the core of Arcana remains Peter Bjärgö, the composer and producer. The band's musical style has consistently evolved, incorporating global sounds and instruments, reflecting Bjärgö's expansive artistic vision. Arcana's last known live performance took place on December 11, 2010, at the Dark Bombastic Evening II festival in Bucharest, Romania. As of 2012, the band's lineup consists of Peter Bjärgö, Ann-Mari Thim, Cecilia Bjärgö, Mattias Borgh, Núria Luis, and Sergio Gamez Martinez.

Other Artists Named Arcana

Arcana (Bill Laswell Project)

Arcana was also a project led by bassist Bill Laswell. Their album "The Last Wave" featured Laswell collaborating with free improvisation pioneers Derek Bailey on guitar and Tony Williams on drums, forming a power trio. Another release under the Arcana name, "Arc of the Testimony," was one of Tony Williams' final recordings. This project expanded the lineup to include guitarists Buckethead and Nicky Skopelitis, cornetist Graham Haynes, and saxophonists Byard Lancaster and Pharoah Sanders. While "The Last Wave" echoed Laswell's work with Last Exit, "Arc of the Testimony" leaned towards the instrumental styles found in Ekstasis or Material's "Hallucination Engine."

Arcana (Peruvian Rock Band)

Arcana was a Peruvian rock band active until their disbandment in 2007, having released four albums. Their discography includes a live demo titled "Demo/Vivo," their debut studio album "Trágalo" (2000), "Virgen" (2003), and their final album "Al Olvido" (2005). Musically, they played rock, with an early sound drawing comparisons to Nirvana, leading to them being jokingly nicknamed "Nircana" or "Arvana." Their last album explored a more experimental and difficult-to-categorize style. The band experienced lineup changes, but founding members Markko Kruz (guitars/vocals) and Micky Bane (bass) remained constant. The drumming positions were filled by Italo Quintanilla on "Trágalo," Giancarlo Cordiglia on "Virgen," and Daniel Limaco on "Al Olvido."
