Lluís Llach i Grande, born May 7, 1948, in Verges, Catalonia, is a highly influential Catalan composer and songwriter. He is recognized as a pivotal figure in the "Nova Cançó" (New Song) movement, a cultural and political phenomenon that emerged during Francisco Franco's dictatorship. Artists in this movement used Catalan, a language suppressed by the regime, to express dissent through their music.

Born into a family with a piano, Llach displayed an early aptitude for music, beginning to compose at the age of six while learning to read and write. He pursued his education in Figueres and later in Barcelona, where he studied engineering and economics. It was during his university years, immersed in anti-Francoist circles, that he connected with the intellectual group "Els Setze Jutges," a precursor to the Nova Cançó movement.
