John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie (October 21, 1917 – January 6, 1993) was an American jazz trumpeter, bandleader, singer, and composer. He was widely known as "the sound of surprise."
Alongside Charlie Parker, Gillespie was a central figure in the evolution of bebop and modern jazz. His innovative style and improvisational genius profoundly shaped the direction of jazz music.
