History
Heavy Vegetable
Heavy Vegetable was a math pop and math rock band formed in Encinitas, California, in 1992. The group, which featured frontman Rob Crow (vocals, guitar), Eléa Tenuta (vocals), Travis Nelson (bass), and Manolo Turner (drums), is recognized for its contributions to the burgeoning math pop and math rock scenes. The band's lineup remained consistent throughout its existence, concluding in 1995.
Early Releases and Label Signing
The band quickly began releasing material, with their first work, a four-track demo titled "A Bunch of Stuff," appearing in 1993. These songs would later be reissued. Towards the end of 1993, Heavy Vegetable released a split 7" with the band Powerdresser. This led to attention from Headhunter Records, who signed the band in 1994. Their debut full-length album, "The Amazing Undersea Adventures of Aqua Kitty and Friends," was released on May 13, 1994.
"Aqua Kitty" and Influences
"The Amazing Undersea Adventures of Aqua Kitty and Friends" showcased the band's characteristic satirical and uplifting lyrics, often featuring themes related to animals and outsider music. The album's artwork included photographs of Travis Nelson's cat, a band photo by Satoru Yoshioka, and underwater imagery by Mark Conlin. The recording process for "Aqua Kitty" took place over eleven days in November 1993. The band also released a split EP with Fugbear, which included a cover of The Residents' song "Perfect Love." Heavy Vegetable toured and played with bands such as P.E.E., who cited them as a significant inspiration.
"Frisbie" and Band Dissolution
In 1995, following the release of "Aqua Kitty," Heavy Vegetable released their second album, "Frisbie," on September 14. The album was recorded between March 1st and July 9th of that year. "Frisbie" continued the band's penchant for animal-themed content and playful lyrics, albeit with a more somber tone, serving as a farewell. The band dissolved shortly after "Frisbie's" release, with members Rob Crow and Eléa Tenuta forming the band Thingy in the same year. The band's formation and dissolution were closely tied to the members' living arrangements in Encinitas, as noted in the "Frisbie" album liner notes.
Post-Breakup Releases and Reunions
In 2000, Headhunter Records released "Mondo Aqua Kitty" on January 13th. This compilation featured unreleased tracks, demos, and other miscellaneous material, marking a final chapter for the band. Rob Crow has maintained a prolific career, participating in numerous other projects including Pinback, Optiganally Yours, and The Ladies, as well as pursuing solo work.
Other Men and Eléa Tenuta's Passing
Eleven years after "Frisbie," Rob Crow, Travis Nelson, and Manolo Turner reunited under the name Other Men, releasing the album "Wake Up Swimming" in 2007. Eléa Tenuta passed away on January 9, 2021, at the age of 48, after a prolonged battle with breast cancer.
