History

The Plugz

The Plugz were a pioneering punk rock band formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1978. They emerged as one of the earliest Latino punk acts, following in the footsteps of bands like The Zeros and Mink DeVille, and contributing to the vibrant Chicano rock scene that also included earlier garage rock groups such as Thee Midniters.

Musical Style and Influences

The band masterfully blended the raw energy of punk with the rich textures of Mexican music. Their sound captured the anger and frustration experienced by Chicano youth, a sentiment vividly expressed in their fast-paced, sardonic rendition of Ritchie Valens' classic, "La Bamba." The Plugz shared the stage and scene with other notable Latino punk bands like The Brat and Los Illegals.

Formation and Legacy

Established in 1978, The Plugz were contemporaries of the bands featured in the seminal documentary 'The Decline of Western Civilization.' They hold a significant place in the history of Los Angeles punk, widely recognized as the city's first do-it-yourself (DIY) punk band. This independent spirit was exemplified by their creation of their own Fatima label to release their music.

Contributions to Film and Television

The Plugz also made notable contributions to film soundtracks. They composed original instrumental music for the cult classic movie Repo Man and performed "Hombre Secreto," a Spanish adaptation of Johnny Rivers' "Secret Agent Man." Their music was also featured in other films, including "Adolescent" in the 1984 independent film Scarred and "Electrify Me" in the 1985 adult film New Wave Hookers.

Notable Performances and Post-Breakup

In a notable moment, The Plugz backed Bob Dylan during his appearance on "Late Night With David Letterman" on March 22, 1984. They performed three songs: Sonny Boy Williamson's "Don't Start Me Talkin'," "Jokerman," and "Licence to Kill." Following their disbandment, members of The Plugz went on to form the successful band Los Cruzados.
