Innerzone Orchestra

Innerzone Orchestra emerged as a significant side project from Detroit techno luminary Carl Craig. This endeavor served as a reflection of Craig's musical journey and, in the pre-millennium era, offered a glimpse into potential future directions for electronic music.

Origins and Early Impact

The genesis of Innerzone Orchestra can be traced back to a 1992 track titled 'Bug In The Bassbin.' This track gained considerable traction within the nascent drum and bass scene after being championed by Ranx, an associate of prominent artists such as 4hero, Goldie, and J. Majik. The track generated significant buzz and re-introduced Carl Craig to a wider audience.

Re-emergence and Expansion

A few years prior to the project's formal launch, renewed interest in 'Bug In The Bassbin' surfaced when James Lavelle, a fervent admirer of Craig's work, re-released the track on his influential Mo' Wax label. Capitalizing on this momentum, Craig established Innerzone Orchestra as a jazz trio, intended for both live performances and studio recordings. Over time, this core ensemble evolved significantly, incorporating a diverse array of talented musicians. Notable collaborators have included bassist Paul Randolph (formerly of Mudd Puppy), Richie Hawtin (also known as Plastikman), accomplished jazz pianist Craig Taborn, and percussionist Francisco Mora, a former sideman to Sun Ra, among others.
