The group's evolution from pioneering classical and jazz crossover artists to a contemporary vocal powerhouse is reflected in their latest lineup of talented young singers. Their diverse repertoire spans classical, jazz, Latin, pop, and rock genres, all brought to life with their innovative vocal rhythm section. The Swingle Singers have performed extensively across the UK, America, Asia, and throughout Europe, releasing over 50 recordings and earning five Grammy Awards.
History
Founded in Paris, France, in 1962 by Ward Swingle, the original Swingle Singers featured Anne Germain, Jeanette Baucomont, and Jean Cussac. Under Ward Swingle's direction, and often accompanied by bass and drums, the group gained recognition for their intricate and technically demanding arrangements. They covered a wide range of musical styles, from classical pieces by composers like Bach, Tchaikovsky, and Beethoven, to modern hits by The Beatles, and operatic works by Rossini. Their arrangements frequently incorporated jazz harmonies and stylings, drawing influence from artists such as Nat King Cole and other smooth vocalists and pianists.
The Swingle Singers were particularly active within the classical music scene. A notable collaboration was their recording of Bach's 'Air On The G String' with the Modern Jazz Quartet. The influential composer Luciano Berio even conceived his postmodern symphony, Sinfonia, for eight voices and orchestra with the group in mind.
Although the original ensemble disbanded in 1973, the Swingle Singers have reformed multiple times since, continuing Ward Swingle's legacy of jazz-infused arrangements and exceptional technical proficiency. The most recent iteration of the group proudly carries the original name, The Swingle Singers.
