History

Hum

Hum is an American alternative rock and post-hardcore band that emerged from Champaign, Illinois, in 1989. The group forged a distinctive sound by blending these genres, creating a characteristic heaviness that became their hallmark. This unique sonic identity is now often referred to as "Heavy Alternative."

Formation and Classic Lineup

Following initial member changes, Hum solidified its lineup in 1993 with Matt Talbot on vocals and guitar, Tim Lash on guitar, Jeff Dimpsey on bass, and Bryan St. Pere on drums. This stable configuration remained intact until the band's initial dissolution in 2000.

Breakthrough and Legacy

The band achieved significant recognition with the single "Stars" from their 1995 album, You'd Prefer An Astronaut. The track garnered widespread attention, appearing in numerous music magazine charts and receiving considerable airplay on radio stations.

Reunion and New Material

After a period of inactivity, marked only by occasional performances, Hum reunited in 2015 for a series of tours. In a surprise announcement on June 23, 2020, the band released Inlet, their first album of new material in over two decades, making it available online.

Tragedy and Hiatus

Tragically, on July 1, 2021, it was announced via Instagram that longtime drummer Bryan St. Pere had passed away at the age of 52. This somber event led the band to cease activities once again.
