History

Napalm Beach

Napalm Beach stands as one of Portland, Oregon's enduring musical acts, with a history stretching back to its formation in 1980 by Chris Newman. Sam Henry joined Newman in 1981, and the band solidified its lineup after a series of thirteen bassists before Dave Dillinger joined in 1989.

Musical Style and Sound

Guitarist Chris Newman cultivated a distinctive sonic signature characterized by the use of a Big Muff fuzz pedal, Fender tremolo, and wah pedal, layered over robust bass lines. Drummer Sam Henry frequently approached his instrument with a lead-playing intensity, adding a dynamic layer to the band's sound.

Early Recordings and Releases

The band's initial recordings were released on the Trap label, operated by Greg Sage of the influential band The Wipers. Sage also took on production duties and distribution for Napalm Beach's debut album, initially released on cassette and later as a CD, titled "Rock & Roll Hell."

Touring and Discography

Between 1989 and 1992, Napalm Beach undertook several European tours. While they did not tour the United States, the band was a consistent presence on stages throughout Portland, Seattle, and occasionally San Francisco during the 1980s and early 1990s. Their recorded output includes approximately a dozen albums released on various independent labels, such as Flying Heart and Tim/Kerr.

Disbandment and Reunions

Facing challenges including being dropped from their German label, Satyricon, and legal issues, Napalm Beach ceased operations in the mid-1990s. Although they are no longer producing new material, the band has performed several reunion shows in the past decade. Both Sam Henry and Chris Newman have remained active in music, participating in numerous other bands and side projects. Chris Newman's current musical endeavor is the band Boo Frog.
