History

Imperative Reaction

Founded in 1996 by Ted Phelps and David Andrecht, Imperative Reaction emerged from the Los Angeles industrial music scene. The band released its debut album, Eulogy For The Sick Child, in 1999. The album garnered critical praise and built a dedicated fanbase, with tracks like “Scorpio” and “The Longing” becoming popular selections on DJ playlists internationally.

Early Years and Growth

David Andrecht departed in 2002, coinciding with the release of Imperative Reaction's second album, Ruined. The aggressive sound of Ruined prompted Phelps to enlist Sam P. and Jason DM from the Los Angeles group Pulse Legion for the live lineup. This period also marked the band's first North American tour.

Establishing a Club-Friendly Sound and Touring

The band's 2004 release, Redemption, blended the rock influences of Ruined with a more accessible, club-oriented sound. The lead single, “Giving In To The Change,” became a dance floor hit. Clint Carney (System Syn, God Module) replaced Jason DM on keyboards, and Imperative Reaction embarked on its second North American tour. This tour led to an invitation to join VNV Nation as direct support for their 2005 Formation Tour. Across 36 shows, Imperative Reaction performed for over 25,000 fans, solidifying their reputation as a compelling live act.

Critical Acclaim and Live Performances

The 2006 album, As We Fall, received widespread critical acclaim. Imperative Reaction then joined EBM pioneers Covenant on their successful Skyshaper US tour. Following this, the band was invited to support VNV Nation on their European Judgment Tour. Upon returning to the US, Imperative Reaction opened for Combichrist on their 2007 North American tour. Further enhancing their live presence, the band added Trevor Friedrich (Combichrist, Eighteen Visions, Suffer Well) as their drummer, a move aimed at expanding and strengthening their live performances.

Ambitious Releases and Lineup Solidification

In 2008, Imperative Reaction released Minus All and undertook their most extensive headlining tour to date. Shortly after the tour concluded, guitarist/keyboardist Adam Vex (Seraphim Shock) joined the band, finalizing the live lineup. The following year, Imperative Reaction joined Metropolis Records labelmates Psyclon Nine for "The Ruina Tour," a co-headlining tour that played to sold-out crowds across the United States.

The Electronic Rock Masterpiece

2010 was dedicated to the creation of the band's most ambitious album, Imperative Reaction. This electronic rock release is considered a masterpiece, showcasing a band at the height of its creative powers and challenging audience expectations.
