History
aespa is a pioneering South Korean girl group formed by SM Entertainment. The quartet, consisting of members Karina, Winter, Giselle, and Ningning, is recognized for its innovative "metaverse" concept. The group's name is a combination of "æ" (representing "Avatar X Experience") and the word "aspect," signifying the theme of experiencing a new world through another self.
Debut and "Next Level" Breakthrough
The group debuted on November 17, 2020, with the single "Black Mamba." The music video set a record for the most views in the first 24 hours for a K-pop debut and became the fastest debut video to surpass 100 million views on YouTube. Following their initial success, aespa released "Forever," a remake of Yoo Young-jin’s 2000 ballad, in early 2021.
In May 2021, aespa achieved massive domestic success with "Next Level." The track, a reimagining of a song from the Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw soundtrack, became a cultural phenomenon in South Korea. It earned multiple accolades, including Song of the Year at the 19th Korean Music Awards. Their first mini-album, Savage, followed in October 2021. The title track achieved a "Perfect All-Kill" on South Korean music charts and the physical "POS" version of the EP received an iF Design Award.
International Expansion and Billboard Success
In 2022, aespa expanded their global reach by performing at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, becoming the first fourth-generation K-pop group to play the main stage. Their second mini-album, Girls, released in July 2022, debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 and recorded over 1.6 million pre-orders, setting a new benchmark for K-pop girl groups at the time.
The group continued their momentum in 2023 with the release of their third mini-album, MY WORLD. Featuring the lead single "Spicy," the album sold over two million copies in its first week. Later that year, they released the English-language single "Better Things" and their fourth mini-album, Drama, which further solidified their presence in the global market through its bold choreography and viral title track.
Full-Length Projects and Artistic Evolution
2024 marked a significant milestone with the release of their first full-length studio album, Armageddon. The pre-release single "Supernova" became one of the most successful digital tracks of the year, achieving a Perfect All-Kill and staying at the top of the charts for several weeks. The album debuted at number 25 on the Billboard 200 and was praised for its complex production and futuristic themes.
In July 2024, aespa made their official Japanese debut with the single "Hot Mess." This was followed by their fifth mini-album, Whiplash, in October 2024. The title track was noted for its sonic evolution and became a significant hit on digital charts across Asia. By 2025, the group continued to innovate with English versions of their hits, a collaboration with PUBG Battlegrounds titled "Dark Arts," and the digital single "Dirty Work" featuring rapper Flo Milli.
Conceptual Lore and the SMCU
Central to aespa’s identity is their narrative universe, part of the SM Culture Universe (SMCU). Each member has a corresponding digital avatar, known as an "æ," who resides in a virtual dimension called "Kwangya." Their music videos and digital episodes often feature recurring characters such as the digital guide nævis and the antagonist Black Mamba. This storytelling approach has created a unique, immersive experience for their global fanbase, known as "MY."
