History
Deafheaven: A Genre-Bending Force in Modern Music
Deafheaven emerged from San Francisco in 2010, quickly establishing themselves as a distinctive voice in contemporary music. Initially a duo comprising vocalist George Clarke and guitarist Kerry McCoy, the band's sonic identity began to take shape with a self-released demo. This early work showcased a potent blend of black metal and post-rock, hinting at the genre-defying approach that would come to define their career.
Formation and Early Releases
Formed in February 2010, Clarke and McCoy, who had prior experience in a grindcore band, recorded their initial demo at Atomic Garden Studios in April of the same year. The four-track release, distributed on cassette and digitally, garnered positive attention, leading the duo to recruit additional musicians. Bassist Derek Prine, guitarist Nick Bassett (also of Whirr and Nothing), and drummer Trevor Deschryver completed the lineup, and the band began performing live in July 2010. By the end of that year, Deafheaven signed with Deathwish Inc., which released their debut album, Roads to Judah, in April 2011. The album solidified their unique style, weaving together elements of black metal, shoegaze, and post-rock.
Critical Acclaim and Sonic Evolution
Deafheaven's sophomore album, Sunbather, released in 2013, propelled them to widespread critical acclaim, earning a place among the year's most celebrated releases. The album, largely composed by Clarke and McCoy with the addition of drummer Daniel Tracy, explored themes of unattainable perfection and the struggles of confronting reality. Its critical success was mirrored by commercial recognition, charting on the Billboard 200. Following Sunbather, the band continued to evolve, releasing New Bermuda in 2015 and Ordinary Corrupt Human Love in 2018. Their fifth album, Infinite Granite, released in 2021, marked a significant shift with a notable reduction in screamed vocals, further demonstrating their willingness to experiment and refine their sound.
Musical Style and Influences
Deafheaven's music is characterized by its "dizzying hybrid of shoegaze shimmer, hardcore punk passion, emo vulnerability, and black metal intensity." This eclectic approach draws from a diverse range of influences, including Morbid Angel, The Smiths, Burzum, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Orchid, Emperor, and My Bloody Valentine. The band's ability to synthesize these disparate elements into a cohesive and emotionally resonant sound has cemented their status as innovators in the modern music landscape.
